Gas Oven Not Heating but the Stovetop Works? Start Here

Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Unplug the range (or switch off its breaker) before you remove any panel. Gas valve and gas line work is for a qualified technician.

It always seems to happen on a holiday or the night before a long weekend: the burners on top light fine, but the oven sits cold. Since the cooktop works, you know gas is reaching the range. That narrows things down a lot. Work through the free checks first, in this order.

Step 1: The free checks (from the manufacturers)

  1. Is the oven gas shut-off on the pressure regulator ON? Whirlpool notes that gas ranges have a separate shut-off valve on the pressure regulator. When it's off, "gas flows to the cooktop burners but does not supply the oven." It can get bumped during moving or by a pan in the storage drawer. This is different from the main gas valve at the wall (Whirlpool). Your installation instructions show where it is.
  2. Is the range plugged into a working, grounded 120-volt outlet? A gas oven still needs electricity to light. GE's manuals say the oven "cannot be lit during a power failure" because "gas will not flow unless the glow bar is hot" (GE gas range manual). Whirlpool says not to use a two-prong adapter or extension cord (Whirlpool). Check the breaker or fuse.
  3. Reset the control. GE suggests turning the breaker off, waiting one minute, and turning it back on to reset electronic oven controls, even if the clock is working (GE: Oven Will Not Come On).
  4. Check the settings. Make sure the door is fully closed, the control isn't locked or in a demo or Sabbath mode, and no delayed start is set. If your knobs were removed for cleaning, make sure they went back in the right spots (GE, Whirlpool).
  5. Self-clean ranges with a manual latch: GE says to make sure the door latch is fully in the "Unlocked" position.
  6. No foil on the oven bottom and nothing jammed in the storage drawer. Whirlpool warns foil or bottom liners "can block air or gas flow to the burner," and an overloaded drawer can interfere with the igniter.
  7. Just installed or reconnected? Air can be trapped in the gas line. Whirlpool says to turn on a surface burner to purge it.

Step 2: Look at the igniter

Most modern gas ovens use a hot-surface "glo-bar" igniter instead of a pilot light. GE's check: set the oven to Bake, open the door, and "look for a red glow in the bottom of the oven towards the back." If there's no red glow, "there may be a malfunction with the Glo-Bar, the oven controls or other electrical components" (GE).

Give it time. The glow by itself isn't a flame, and the burner doesn't light instantly. In one GE gas range manual, the oven burner lights "after 30-90 seconds" (GE manual). Your model may differ, so check your owner's manual. GE also notes that the orange glow cycling on and off while the oven holds temperature is normal (GE: Orange glow in oven).

What each result usually means

Replacing a bake igniter is a common repair, but it means working inside the oven near gas fittings. If you're not comfortable with that, or anything involves the gas valve or gas lines, call a qualified technician.

Find your model number first

Parts are model-specific. Your owner's manual shows where the model and serial number label is on your range. Have both ready before you order parts or call for service.

Electric oven instead?

Whirlpool's electric checklist covers the door, control lock, demo mode, delayed start, and (on new installs) the power-cord terminal block (Whirlpool). Also check the house breaker or fuses. Same idea as our dryer-not-heating guide.

Cooking in an RV?

RV propane ranges are a different setup. For RV appliances, see RV furnace and water heater troubleshooting and RV fridge not cooling.

FAQ

Why do my stove burners work but my oven doesn't heat? Gas is reaching the range, so look at the oven side: the regulator's oven shut-off, power to the range, control settings, then the bake igniter.

Can I light a gas oven with a match during a power outage? Not on electric-ignition models. GE says these ovens cannot be lit manually because gas won't flow unless the glow bar is hot.

The igniter glows orange. Isn't that the flame? No. GE notes the glow is often mistaken for the flame. You should see the burner flame after the normal ignition delay.

Who do I call? Your manufacturer's service options (listed on the GE and Whirlpool support pages linked above) or a qualified local appliance technician. For a gas smell, call your gas utility first.
